Allendale
Allendale ‘Town’, voted Best Village in the North of England in the 2007 Calor Village of the Year Competition, is a pretty stone village in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village forms a thriving centre to the East and West Allen Valleys - a quiet, scenic backwater between the hustle and bustle of Weardale & the Tyne valley. The surrounding countryside is an area of stunning and varied landscapes. Heather moorland and tumbling upland rivers adjoin the stone-built villages and tranquil farmland. This is truly an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The village lies roughly midway between Newcastle upon Tyne and Carlisle, and can be reached from most of the area of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham in under an hour and a half. If travelling from the M6, Allendale can be reached in under an hour from Penrith via a beautiful drive on the A686 (one of the Sunday Times Top 10 Drives in England).
